Track and Field's Selkin Breaks 5k Record at Tufts Snowflake Classic

Somerville, Mass. - April 2, 2022 - The Mount Holyoke College track and field team competed at the Tufts Snowflake Classic on Saturday afternoon, as the Lyons were highlighted by a record-breaking performance from junior Lauren Selkin (Greenwich, Conn.) and finished the meet in 7th of 18 teams with 39 points.

Selkin, who was a national qualifier at the NCAA Division III Women's Cross Country National Championship meet this past fall, established a new outdoor track and field program record at Mount Holyoke College with a time of 17:56.68 in the women's 5k. The previous record was held by Hannah Rieders, who ran a time of 18:00.20 in 2019. Tessa Lancaster (Mansfield, Mass.) also raced in the women's 5k and took eighth with a time of 18:59.25.

Senior Simone Jacob (San Francisco, Calif.) was the Lyons' top performer in the 200 meter dash with a time of 28.05 seconds, while Devan Ravino (West Kingston, R.I.) raced to a top-20 finish in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:07.16. Eliza Butler (Hartsdale, N.Y.) also posted a top-20 finish in the 400 meter hurdles, clocking in at 1:19.26, good for 17th. Jacob would go on to be the runner-up in the 800 meter with a time of 2:18.73, which was just 1.01 seconds off of the program record and was the third-fastest 800-meter time in program history. The senior was followed by Kim Beaver (Agawam, Mass.), who took ninth with a time of 2:28.30.

Selkin was second in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:48.94, which was the second fastest a student-athlete at Mount Holyoke has ever clocked in the event. Sophia Gronbeck (Westfield, Mass.) was fourth in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 13:22.97, while in the 10k, Emily Hood (Hardwick, Mass.) was fifth with a time of 43:39.77.

In the throwing events, Emma Doyle (West Lebanon, N.H.) placed fifth with a distance of 10.33 meters in the shot put.

Mount Holyoke College will take the short trip to Amherst College on Saturday, April 9 and will complete in the Amherst Spring Fling beginning at 10 a.m.
