Squash Splits Four Matches at Yale Round Robin

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Jan. 23, 2011) – The Mount Holyoke College women's squash team split four matches at the Yale University Round Robin this weekend. After falling 9-0 to perennial power Yale yesterday morning, the Lyons rebounded with a 9-0 triumph over St. Lawrence University. They closed out the day with an 8-1 victory over Bowdoin College before falling 7-2 to Middlebury College today. All four matches took place at the Brady Squash Center.

In its first match of the weekend, Mount Holyoke faced off against Yale for the second time in program history. The Bulldogs, who entered the contest ranked second nationally, cruised to a 9-0 win to improve to 10-0 on the year. They have dropped just 10 matches all season.

The Lyons quickly bounced back with a 9-0 triumph over St. Lawrence in their second match. First year Randima Ranaweera, sophomore Shara Robertson, first year Katrina Intal, sophomore Kathryn Brummer, junior Marie Ozanne, first year Elyse Taylor and first year Julianna Dahbura each posted shutouts. Meanwhile junior Paulina Rojek and sophomore My-Linh Nguyen picked up 3-1 victories. It was the first meeting between the programs since the 2001-02 season. They have each prevailed twice.

Mount Holyoke rounded out the day with an 8-1 victory over Bowdoin. This time, Intal, Brummer, Nguyen, sophomore Tempest Bowden and first year Shaheen Madraswala each came out on top 3-0. Robertson, Rojek and Ozanne added 3-1 wins, as the Lyons downed Bowdoin for the fifth time in a row.

In its final match of the weekend, Mount Holyoke fell 7-2 to Middlebury College. Ranaweera and Madraswala earned wins for the Lyons. After dropping the first game of her number one tilt, Ranaweera rebounded to win 3-1. Meanwhile, Madraswala raced to a 3-0 victory at the number four slot.

Mount Holyoke (9-8) will return to action next Saturday at Hamilton College.
