Squash Earns Split on Second Day of 2011 Pioneer Valley Invitational

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Jan. 15, 2011) – The Mount Holyoke College women's squash team split a pair of matches on the second day of the 2011 Pioneer Valley Invitational this afternoon. After falling 6-3 to Columbia University, the Lyons rebounded with a 9-0 triumph over Colby College.

A total of 23 men's and women's squads from around the region are competing in the annual tournament, which kicked off yesterday and will conclude tomorrow. Over the course of the weekend, 43 matches will be played at Smith College and Amherst College in addition to Mount Holyoke.

In its first match of the day, Mount Holyoke sustained a 6-3 setback to Columbia University. Junior Shara Robertson, sophomore Tempest Bowden and first year Shaheen Madraswala each came up with wins for the Lyons. After splitting the first two games of her number two match against Monica Stone, Robertson took the next two to seal things. Bowden prevailed 3-0 in her number three contest against Annie Tickell, while Madraswala topped Katie Quan 3-1 at the number four slot after dropping the first game. First years Randima Ranaweera and Katrina Intal each fell in five games, while classmate Elyse Taylor was dropped in four.

The Lyons bounced back with a convincing 9-0 victory over Colby in their final match of the weekend. From one to nine, their lineup featured Ranaweera, Robertson, Bowden, Madraswala, Intal, sophomore Kathryn Brummer, junior Paulina Rojek, sophomore My-Linh Nguyen and junior Marie Ozanne.

Mount Holyoke (7-5) will return to action on Wednesday, when it hosts Brown University at 4:00 p.m.
