Squash Falls to Bates on Opening Day of 2011 Pioneer Valley Invitational

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Jan. 14, 2011) – The Mount Holyoke College women's squash team suffered a 7-2 setback to Bates College in its first match of the 2011 Pioneer Valley Invitational this evening. A total of 23 men's and women's squads from around the region are competing in the annual tournament, which kicked off today and will run through Sunday.

Elyse Taylor Over the course of the weekend, 43 matches will be played at Smith College and Amherst College in addition to Mount Holyoke. The Lyons will wrap things up with contests against Columbia University (11:30 a.m.) and Colby College (4:00 p.m.) tomorrow.

Mount Holyoke's wins came from junior Shara Robertson and first year Shaheen Madraswala. After dropping the first game of her number two match against Mimi Neal, Robertson dominated the next three to secure a 3-1 triumph. Meanwhile, Madraswala breezed to a 3-0 victory over Ali Bragg at the number four slot.

Sophomore Tempest Bowden went the distance in her number three tilt against Ashley Brooks before falling 3-2. Meanwhile, first year Katrina Intal and sophomore Kathryn Brummer both dropped 3-1 decisions to Stephanie Chabot and Samantha Matos, respectively.

Cheri-Ann Parris, Rakey Drammeh, Anna Hogeland and Liza Dorison each came up with 3-0 victories for Bates, which entered the weekend as the 12th ranked team in the nation. With the win, the Bobcats pushed their overall record to 6-5.

Prior to this evening's loss, Mount Holyoke had posted an unblemished mark of 16-0 over the previous four installments of the tournament. The 13th ranked Lyons fell to 6-4 on the year.
