Squash Newcomer Shaheen Madraswala Collects Lyon of the Week Accolades

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Dec. 7, 2010) – Squash player Shaheen Madraswala has been named Lyon of the Week for the week of November 29 - December 5 after leading Mount Holyoke to four shutout victories this weekend at the Wesleyan University Round Robin. The first year posted a perfect 4-0 record, dropping just 32 points in the process.

She occupied the number three position in Mount Holyoke's 9-0 victories over Wellesley College and William Smith College on Saturday. After defeating Wellesley's Dorothy Vickery 11-1, 11-1, 11-2, she handed William Smith's Lucia Rowe an 11-5, 11-0, 11-2 setbacks.

Madraswala was at it again on Sunday, when the Lyons closed out the weekend with shutout wins over Connecticut College and Wesleyan University. She opened the day with an 11-5, 11-0, 11-4 win over Connecticut College's Jillian Sandler. The first year then cruised to an 11-4, 11-3, 11-5 triumph over Wesleyan's Tenesha Jackson. Her final two wins of the weekend came at the number four slot.

Over the first three weeks of her collegiate career, Madraswala has posted an overall record of 6-2. She is currently ranked 85th in the College Squash Association Individual Rankings. Joining her in the top 100 are teammates Randima Ranaweera (25), Vidushi Gurunada (39), Shara Robertson (54) and sophomore Tempest Bowden (89).

As a team, Mount Holyoke has captured six straight wins to cement its position among the nation's top teams. The Lyons are currently ranked 13th in the country with a 6-2 mark. They are slated to host eighth ranked Dartmouth College after returning from break on Tuesday, January 11 at 5:00 p.m.
