Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Jan. 23rd

 RIDING

The Lyons were back in the ring on Saturday, competing at the 2017 Winter I Tournament of Champions event at Bridgewater College. MHC saw a number of outstanding performances, leading them to fifth overall. Junior Sabrina Fox (Westfield, Mass.) was among the top performers, earning the blue ribbon for a win in novice flat. Mount Holyoke is back in action on Saturday, returning to Virginia to compete in the Winter II Tournament of Champions event, hosted by Emory & Henry.

 

SWIMMING & DIVING

Mount Holyoke was in action at the 2017 Seven Sisters Championship last weekend. The Lyons compiled 512 points in the meet to finish fourth overall. Leading the way was a solid effort from first year diver Samantha Nemivant (Scottsdale, Ariz.), who finished fourth off both boards, including a school record effort on the 3-meter. MHC (2-6) is back in action on Saturday, traveling to Simmons for a 12pm dual meet against the Sharks.

 

SQUASH

The Lyons shouldered tough losses to Colby and Wesleyan at the Pioneer Valley Invitational last week. Sophomore Ragini Ghose (Dubai) had an outstanding effort on the weekend, gutting out a 3-2 win against the Mules before posting a 3-1 victory against the Cardinals. Mount Holyoke (2-13) returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Haverford (1:30pm) and Dickinson (6:30pm).

 

BASKETBALL

Mount Holyoke fell against Plymouth State and Babson last week. First year guard Katlyn Grover (Bernardston, Mass.) posted 14 points overall, including four three-pointers. The Lyons (2-14; 0-9 NEWMAC) is back on the court on Wednesday, traveling to Springfield for a 7:30pm contest. MHC wraps-up the week at home on Saturday, hosting Wheaton at 1pm in a battle of the Lyons.

TRACK & FIELD

The Lyons opened the 2017 portion of their schedule on Saturday at Smith College Pioneer Invitational. MHC was paced by sophomore Donari Yahzid (Atlanta, Ga.), who finished third in the long jump. Mount Holyoke is back on the track on Saturday when it travels to Springfield College to compete in the Massasoit Classic. Action begins at 10am.
