Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Apr. 10th

RIDING

The Lyons posted 41 points enroute to winning the Zone 1 Championships on Saturday and advance to the 2017 IHSA National Championships in Lexington, Ky. It was a five blue ribbon effort for MHC, led by juniors Maddy Skrak (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Sabrina Fox (Westfield, Mass.), who earned top honors in team intermediate fences and team novice flat, respectively. The Lyons are now idle until May 4 when they travel to Kentucky for Nationals. Action will run through May 7.

TRACK & FIELD

Mount Holyoke was back in action on Saturday at the Smith College Invitational. The Lyons saw a number of strong efforts, paced by junior Shante Henderson (New York, N.Y.), who won the 100-meter hurdles in a New England Division III qualifying time of 16.30. MHC returns to competition on Saturday when it hosts the Spring Fling Invitational at the Track & Turf Complex. Action is set to begin at 11am.

 

LACROSSE

The Lyons shouldered losses to Wheaton and Springfield in conference action last week. Junior midfielder Kaitlin Braz (Tolland, Conn.) paced the way for MHC, scoring four goals while adding 10 ground balls and four caused turnovers. Mount Holyoke (2-9; 0-4 NEWMAC) plays its final regular season road contest on Wednesday at Coast Guard (7pm), before returning home on Friday to welcome MIT (4pm).

TENNIS

The Lyons finished third at the 2017 Seven Sisters Championship last weekend. MHC defeated Bryn Mawr (5-0) and Smith (5-0), but suffered tough losses to Wellesley (3-2) and to this year's champion, Vassar (4-1). First years Ching-Ching Huang (Lukang Township, Taiwan) and Catherine Peabody (San Francisco, Calif.) were named to the All-Tournament Team for their efforts. Mount Holyoke (12-8) closes out its 2016-17 season this week, traveling to Gordon on Thursday (5:30pm), before finishing at Endicott on Saturday (1pm).

GOLF

Mount Holyoke was back on the links last weekend, competing at the Vassar College Invitational. The Lyons finished sixth in the 12-team field, paced by senior captain Allison Shilling (New Canaan, Conn.), who was tied for 10th overall at the end of the weekend. MHC is back in action this weekend at the Jack Leaman Invitational, hosted by Amherst College at the Hickory Ridge Golf Club. Action runs through Sunday.

 

ROWING

The Lyons had a solid effort on Sunday, competing against a number of teams on Lake Quinsigamond. MHC's varsity eight boat paced the way, finishing second overall and within a second of the winning boat. Mount Holyoke will be back on the water on Saturday when it travels to Coast Guard to compete against the host Bears and Johnson & Wales.
