Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Dec. 5th

RIDING

The Lyons headed to Ohio last weekend, competing at the Holiday Tournament of Champions. MHC finished 10th overall, aided by junior Mollie Kowalchik (Loveland, Ohio), who placed fourth in open flat and finished third in the High Medal competition. Mount Holyoke is now idle for the holiday break, but returns to action on January 21st when it travels to Weyers Cave, Va., to compete in the Winter I Tournament of Champions event, which is the third leg of the 2016-17 Tournament of Champions series.

 

SWIMMING & DIVING

Mount Holyoke headed to New York last weekend, taking part in the Hamilton Invitational, hosted by Hamilton College. The Lyons, who finished seventh overall, saw a number of strong efforts on the weekend including a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay by senior Katie Tyler (Hadley, Mass.) sophomore Bri Groves (Reston, Va.) and seniors Anne Kuenning (Bow, N.H.) and Emily Craig (Rochester, N.Y.). MHC (1-3) is now idle for the holidays, but returns to action on Thursday, January 12th when it hosts Clark and Wheaton for tri-match action beginning at 1pm.

 

SQUASH

The Lyons (2-6) shouldered a tough 8-1 loss to Tufts in action last week. Junior junior Brandy Williamson (New York, N.Y.) grabbed the lone victory for MHC, posting a 3-1 win from the top of the ladder. Mount Holyoke is now idle until Friday, January 6 when it travels to Williamstown, Mass., to face Williams (12pm) and Bowdoin (2pm).

 

BASKETBALL

The Lyons shouldered losses to Clark and MIT to open their NEWMAC schedule last week. First year Kathryn Violette (Yokosuka City, Japan) posted 15 points and 11 rebounds with six assists and four steals on the week. Mount Holyoke (2-5; 0-2 NEWMAC) returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Springfield at 7pm. The Lyons will conclude the week on Saturday, traveling to the University of Saint Joseph at 1pm.

TRACK & FIELD

Mount Holyoke opened its 2016-17 season on Saturday, competing at the Smith College Winter Invitational. The Lyons were paced by sophomore Donari Yahzid, who posted a New England D3 Qualifying mark in the long jump, posting a distance of 5.15 meters. MHC is now idle until January 21st when it returns to action at the Smith College Beynon Invitational.
