Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Sept. 19th

SOCCER

Mount Holyoke went 1-1 last week, defeating Western New England, 2-0, before shouldering a 2-0 loss to Babson in its NEWMAC opener. Senior captain and goalie Zoe Marshall (Mississauga, Ont.) posted 20 saves on the week, including 15 in the win over the Golden Bears. MHC (3-3) is back on the pitch on Tuesday when it hosts Albertus Magnus at 7pm. The Lyons close out the week on Saturday, welcoming NEWMAC-rival Emerson for a 1pm clash.

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey went 1-1 last week, shouldering a 3-0 loss to Williams before defeating Thomas, 2-1 on the road. Sophomore midfielder Mirjam Keochakian (Hamburg, Germany) assisted on both goals in the victory. MHC (2-3) is back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Wesleyan for a 7pm game. The Lyons close out the week on Saturday, opening their NEWMAC slate on the road against Wellesley at 12pm.

TENNIS

Mount Holyoke fell to NEWMAC-rival MIT in its only match last week. The Lyons (4-1; 2-1 NEWMAC) return to the court on Tuesday in a 5pm match at Smith. Mount Holyoke concludes the week at MIT when it competes in the 2016 ITA Northeast Regional Championships. Action at the tournament runs Friday through Sunday.

 

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons suffered losses to NEWMAC-foes Babson and Emerson last week, both by 3-0 margins.  Sophomore outside hitter Jamesa Allen (Orlando, Fla.) had a solid week, posting 17 kills. Mount Holyoke (2-5; 0-2 NEWMAC) returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts conference-rival MIT at 6pm. The Lyons close out the week on Saturday, welcoming Wheaton at 1pm.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Lyons finished second out of 16 teams in the subvarsity race at the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational. Junior Sunny Shan (Cupertino, Calif.) paced MHC with a victory in the race. Mount Holyoke is now idle until October 1 when it travels to Saratoga Springs, N.Y., to compete in the Saratoga Invitational. 

 

GOLF

The Lyons golf team opened its 2016-17 season on Saturday at the Ann S. Batchelder Invitational, hosted by Wellesley College. MHC finished sixth overall at the invite, paced by senior captain June Conti (Amenia, N.Y.), who finished 23rd overall. Mount Holyoke returns to the links this weekend when it hosts the MHC Invitational at The Orchards Golf Club. Action begins on Saturday and runs through Sunday.

 

RIDING

The Lyons riding team opened its season last weekend, sending two teams to compete at the Preseason Tournament of Champions, hosted by Goucher College. MHC's squads took home fourth and seventh, respectively, paced by first year Franny Eremeeva, who earned TOC High Collegiate Medal honors, as well as a blue ribbon in Open Fences. Mount Holyoke returns to the arena on October 1 when it competes at the Williams College Show.
