Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Oct. 10th

SOCCER

Mount Holyoke went 2-0 last week, defeating Clark (1-0) and Wellesley (3-2) in NEWMAC play. Sophomore Sara Sanaú Ruiz (Zaragoza, Spain) notched two goals with two assists on the week, including the game-winner against the Cougars. MHC (7-5-0; 2-3-0 NEWMAC) returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Coast Guard for a 7pm match. The Lyons conclude the week on Saturday at 1pm at Wheaton.

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team posted a 2-0 mark in NEWMAC action last week, besting Smith (3-2) and Springfield (2-1). Junior midfielder Kathryn Rawson (Old Town, Maine) notched a goal and an assist on the week, including the game-winner against the Pride. MHC (6-4; 3-1 NEWMAC) is back in the field on Wednesday when it hosts Simmons at 7pm. The Lyons cap the week with a critical conference match on Saturday at Babson 12pm.

TENNIS

Mount Holyoke posted a 1-1 record last week, defeating Springfield (8-1) before falling to Babson (6-3). First year Ching-Ching Huang (Lukang Township, Taiwan) went 2-0 on the week in second flight singles. The Lyons (6-2; 4-2 NEWMAC), who have now qualified for 13 straight NEWMAC Tournament appearances, are back in action on this weekend when they take part in the NEWITT Tournament, which will be held at MHC, Smith and Amherst.

MHC also secured the fourth-seed in the upcoming conference tournament and will host fifth-seeded Wheaton on Wedensday, October 19th at 3pm.

 

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons went 1-1 last week, falling to Coast Guard (3-0) before defeating Elms (3-0). suffered losses to Wellesley (3-0), Clark (3-0) and Rhode Island College (3-1) last week. Junior outside hitter Katrina Meserve (Falmouth, Maine) notched 10 kills with just two errors on 13 total swings in the victory. Mount Holyoke (3-11; 0-7 NEWMAC) is back on the court on Tuesday, traveling to Springfield for a 7pm match. The Lyons conclude the week on Saturday in tri-match action at Keene State, facing Plymouth State (12pm) and the host Owls (2pm).

CROSS COUNTRY

The Lyons were in action at the Open New England Championships at Franklin Park last week, finishing 35th overall on the weekend. Junior Mia Barnes, who crossed the line with a time of 21:04.02 - good for 128th overall, was the Lyons top overall finisher in the 5k multi-divisional race. MHC returns to action on Sunday at 10am when it travels to Wellesley to compete at the 2016 Seven Sisters Championship. 

 

GOLF

The Lyons golf team traveled to Middlebury last weekend, finishing fifth overall at the George Phinney Golf Classic. MHC was paced by senior captain June Conti (Amenia, N.Y.), who was 18th overall. Mount Holyoke concludes its fall schedule this weekend, traveling to New Jersey for the NYU Fall Invitational. Action begins on Saturday at 2pm at the Forest Hill Field Club in Bloomington, N.J., and wraps-up on Sunday at 11am.

 

RIDING

The Lyons was idle last week, but returns to action this weekend when it competes at the Smith College IHSA Show on Saturday.

 

ROWING

MHC takes to the water for the first time this fall, competing at the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta on Saturday. Action begins at 8:30am on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.
