SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Through an NCAA Division III Ethnic Minority and Women's Internship Grant, Derrick Redd has been hired to join the Mount Holyoke College athletics staff. The appointment, which is a two-year position, will see Redd in the role of athletic communications intern.
"I am very thankful to be in the position that I am in and am most excited to transition from a scholar-athlete to an athletics professional," said Redd. "Mount Holyoke College will be the canvas to which I can focus my creativity and ideas on. I look forward to playing a big role in the athletic program and being a part of the family for the next two years. I would like to thank the search committee, Amie Canfield and Lori Hendricks for giving me such a great opportunity."
Redd comes to Mount Holyoke following an undergraduate career at the University of Minnesota Crookston where he was the student assistant to the sports information director for the last year and a half. During his tenure, he authored game stories for the athletics webpage, conducted interviews with players, utilized Stat Crew, while also helping to update the athletics website.
Additionally, Redd hosted an online show called Regal's Rundown. He interviewed players, coaches and staff members for exceptional performances and efforts, earning the distinction of interviewing the University Chancellor as well.
Redd also served as a work-study student for athletics over a five-year period, performing a number of different tasks. In addition to managing the fitness center, he ran promotions before and at halftime of different events, while also selling team apparel and gear.
With the Golden Eagles basketball team, Redd was consistently among the top in scoring during his four-year career, finishing third all-time (879 points). He finished second on the team during the 2015-16 season, averaging 11.2 points per game, while leading the team with 11.4 points per game as a junior. Redd also served as a captain during his senior season.
A member NCAA Life Skills program, Redd also volunteered his time through a number of initiatives including as an instructor at summer basketball camps. He also helped box food at a local food bank, read to elementary school children and has most recently served as a VIP experience guide for Nike.
Redd received his bachelor's in Marketing and Sport & Recreation from Minnesota Crookston in May of 2016.
The NCAA Division III Ethnic Minority and Women's Internship Grant Program is a two-year grant program that provides funding for entry-level administrative positions at NCAA Division III schools and conference offices to encourage access, recruitment, selection and the long-term success of ethnic minorities and women. Mount Holyoke's grant, which runs from 2016 until 2018, will focus on the skills and experience in an athletic communications office.
