Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Oct. 24th

SOCCER

Mount Holyoke suffered a 2-0 loss to Springfield, but rebounded with a 2-0 Senior Day victory against Elms to close out the regular season home schedule. Senior goalie Zoe Marshall (Mississaugua, Ont.) notched 13 saves on the week. The Lyons (8-8-0; 2-6-0 NEWMAC) are back on the field on Tuesday when they travel to Smith for a 3:30pm conference tilt. MHC closes out the week and its regular season schedule on Saturday at WPI for a 4pm contest.

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team went 2-1 last week, besting WPI (3-2) and Western New England (4-1) before falling to MIT (2-0). Senior forward Charlotte Wagner (West Chester, Pa.) paced the offensive effort with three goals and two assists on the week. Mount Holyoke (9-6; 4-3 NEWMAC) is back in action on Wednesday, traveling to Westfield State for a 7pm match. The Lyons then conclude their regular season schedule on Saturday, traveling to Wheaton for a critical NEWMAC match at 1pm.

TENNIS

Mount Holyoke saw its 2016 fall season come to an end in the NEWMAC Tournament. After defeating Wheaton, 5-0, in the conference quarterfinals, the fourth-seeded Lyons took on top-seeded MIT, shouldering a 5-0 semifinals loss. The Lyons conclude their fall season with an 8-4 overall mark, going 5-3 in the NEWMAC. Saturday's semifinal appearance marked the seventh time in program history that the Lyons had advanced.

 

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons went 2-1 last week, posting 3-0 wins over Albertus Magnus and Westfield State, before shouldering a 3-1 loss to Daniel Webster. First year Sasha Simine (Kitchener, Ont.) had an outstanding effort for MHC, posting 31 kills with just three errors over that span. MHC (5-15; 0-8 NEWMAC) is back in action on Tuesday, hosting Smith at 7pm. The Lyons conclude their regular season on Saturday, welcoming WPI at 1pm.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Lyons were idle last week, but return to action on Saturday when they head to Smith College to compete in the 2016 NEWMAC Championships. Action begins at 12pm. UPDATE: Due to weather conditions, the championship race has been moved to 3pm on Saturday.

 

RIDING

The Lyons claimed victory once again last weekend, earning victory at the UMass IHSA Show. First year Harriet Thomson (Carlisle, Mass.) led the way, earning overall high point and novice high point rider honors. Mount Holyoke is back in the show ring on Saturday when it hosts the first of two fall shows at the MHC Equestrian Center.

 

ROWING

MHC was idle last week, but returns to action on Sunday when it travels to Smith to take part in the 2016 Seven Sisters Championship. The event is scheduled to begin at 10:30am. SWIMMING & DIVING

Mount Holyoke kicks-off its 2016-17 season on Friday, hosting Assumption at 5:30pm. The Lyons then compete on Saturday at 10am, heading to Northampton for the Smith College Relays. Under the direction of 19th-year head coach Dave Allen, the Lyons look to improve upon a season in which they finished 8-2 in dual meet action, placing thrid at Seven Sisters and ninth at the NEWMAC Championships.
