SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) has announced its year-end honors and two Mount Holyoke College student-athletes were named to the conference's Winter All-Sportsmanship Team.
The award, which was established by the NEWMAC this academic year, is intended to recognize one student-athlete from each team, in every sport that best demonstrates the ideals of the NEWMAC and its Code of Conduct, regardless of his/her overall performance or statistics for the season.
Recognized for basketball was senior captain and forward Xajaah Williams-Flores (The Bronx, N.Y./Holderness School). During her final season, Williams-Flores was one of three players in the NEWMAC to average double-figures in rebounding for the season. Her 10.1 rebounds per game was good for third in the conference, while her 8.1 points per game was also a career-best.
Williams-Flores had her best offensive performances during the week of November 17, where she scored a career-high 15 points in back-to-back games, followed by 16 points in the next contest.
Williams-Flores was the NEWMAC Defensive Athlete of the Week on February 13th after grabbing 29 rebounds on the weekend. It marked her first career conference honor. She also earned Lyon of the Week on December 13th.
In swimming & diving, senior captain Anne Kuenning (Bow, N.H./Bow) was selected after a solid season of action. Highlighting her season was the Seven Sisters Championships, which saw her help the 200-yard relay team to second in a time of 1:44.70. She also propelled the 200-yard medley relay (1:56.04) to second, while finishing fourth in both the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.15) and 800-yard freestyle relay (8:42.92).
Kuenning, who is a six-time record holder at MHC, went on to compete in the NEWMAC Championship, helping the 200-yard medley relay team finish eighth overall (1:52.64). She was also eighth in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:40.68) and ninth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:10.71). Kuenning was also a Lyon of the Week honoree after helping the 200-yard freestyle team to victory at the Hamilton Invitational in December.
