DUBLIN, Ireland – Former Mount Holyoke lacrosse standout and assistant coach Ashley DeFlumere has been named to the Irish National Team for the upcoming 2017 FIL Women's World Cup. It marks the third tournament appearance for the 2009 graduate, who also played for Team Ireland in 2013 and 2015.
The 18-player roster will compete in the 2017 FIL Women's World Cup, to be held at the University of Surrey, in Guilford, Surrey, England from July 12-22. The 28-team event was first held in 1982 and takes place every four years. The United States has won seven of the nine previous championships, with Australia taking the other two.
DeFlumere, who hails from Bryant Pond, Maine, was a four-year mainstay on the MHC lacrosse team. A captain during her senior season in 2009, she anchored the Lyons defensive backfield, totaling 31 ground balls, seven draw controls and 19 caused turnovers in 42 career contests. Highlighting her collegiate career was a 16 ground ball, five draw control and nine caused turnover season as a junior.
In addition, DeFlumere was an assistant coach for the Lyons lacrosse team, serving in that position for the 2015 and 2016 seasons. She was also a Visiting Lecturer of Computer Science at Mount Holyoke College, where she taught courses in programming and data structures. She joined the Computer Science Department after receiving her Ph.D. from University College Dublin.
Ireland returns 11 players, comprised of veterans of the 2009 & 2013 World Cup, and 2012 & 2015 European Championship teams. This will be the first international tournament for seven players; the most newcomers since the 2009 World Cup. The Girls in Green look to improve on their 10th place finish at the 2013 World Cup. This is the second major championship in less than two years for DeFlumere, who represented Ireland at the 2015 ELF Women's Lacrosse European Championship in August of 2015. During that competition, the squad finished fifth overall among 17 competing teams, with DeFlumere starting all six games in goal for the Irish. Among the highlights for DeFlumere at that event was a 19-3 victory against Belgium, a 14-3 win against Latvia and an 8-4 win against Germany.
