Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Oct. 31st

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team posted a 2-0 mark last week, defeating Westfield State and Wheaton. Senior forward Charlotte Wagner (West Chester, Pa.) had two goals, including the game-winner over the Owls, and an assist. Mount Holyoke (11-6; 5-3 NEWMAC) is back on the field on Tuesday when it makes its 18th straight appearance in the NEWMAC Tournament.

The Lyons, who are the fifth-seed, will travel to fourth-seeded Wellesley for a 3pm showdown in the conference quarterfinals. This is the 12th postseason meeting against the Blue in program history, including the fifth straight. It also marks the sixth time the two teams are meeting in the quarterfinals. The winner of Tuesday's match advances to the NEWMAC Semifinals to face top-seed and host Babson on Saturday.

SOCCER

Mount Holyoke shouldered losses at Smith and WPI to conclude its 2016 season. The Lyons finished the season with an 8-10-0 overall record, going 2-8-0 in the NEWMAC.

 

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons suffered losses to Smith and WPI last week to conclude its 2016 campaign. MHC saw senior captain Natalie Lyon (Oakton, Va.) post 51 assists with 24 digs over the span, to wrap-up her outstanding career. MHC finished its season with a 5-17 record, going 0-10 in NEWMAC play. 

 

CROSS COUNTRY

The Lyons returned to action on Saturday, competing at the NEWMAC Championships, hosted by Smith College. MHC finished ninth in the standings, led by first year Alicia Moroyoqui (Groton, Conn.), who finished 42nd overall with a time of 21:11. Mount Holyoke returns to action on November 12 when it competes at the 2016 NCAA New England Regional Championships, hosted at Westfield State University.

 

RIDING

The Lyons earned their fourth straight IHSA show victory of the season on Saturday, posting a 45-point winning effort in their own home show at the MHC Equestrian Center. Mount Holyoke was just four points shy of a perfect score at the show, which saw a number of outstanding efforts. Leading the way for MHC was junior Mika McKinney (Belfast, Maine), who earned Overall High Point Rider honors after winning the ride-off and claiming wins in novice fences and intermediate flat. Mount Holyoke is back in the show ring on November 12 when it competes at the Amherst College IHSA Show, hosted a Biscuit Hill Farm.

 

ROWING

MHC returned to the water last weekend, finishing fourth overall at the 2016 Seven Sisters Championships, hosted by Smith College. The Lyons saw a number of outstanding efforts, including a second-place finish in the varsity eight race, along with a third-place effort in the second varsity eight event. MHC concluded its fall campaign with the championship and returns to action in the spring.  

 

SWIMMING & DIVING

Mount Holyoke opened its season last weekend, falling short against Division II Assumption (157-114) before posting a solid effort at the non-team scoring Smith College Relays. Leading the way was sophomore Bri Groves (Reston, Va.), who posted three individual wins against the Greyhounds, while also adding a relay win. The Lyons are back in action on Saturday as they travel to the University of New England for a 1pm meet against the Nor'Easters.

 

SQUASH

Under the direction of fifth-year head coach Erin Robson, the Lyons squash team opens its 2016-17 season on Saturday with matches against Vassar (12pm) and Fordham (2pm) in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. MHC looks to improve from a season ago, in which the team went 8-16, including victory in the Epps Cup Consolation Final at the CSA National Team Championships.
