Volleyball Overpowers MCLA and Becker

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Oct. 9, 2010) – Using a balanced attack, the Mount Holyoke College women's volleyball team raced to a pair of victories this afternoon at the Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium. After downing the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts 3-1, the Lyons blanked Becker College 3-0.

Senior setter Kateryna Kuc racked up 34 assists, five kills and five digs in Mount Holyoke's 3-1 win over MCLA. The Lyons also received a boost from first year outside hitter Martina Kneifel, who delivered a career best 18 kills.  Classmate Kristina Weld posted six kills, while sophomore right side hitter Morgan Cooley added five. On the defensive end, sophomore outside hitter Kathryn Brummer and senior defensive specialist Rosa Marruffo tallied 21 and 15 digs, respectively. Mount Holyoke amassed six blocks as a team.

It was more of the same in the Lyons 3-0 victory over Becker. Kuc dished out 30 assists for the fifth time this year and ninth time of her outstanding career. Meanwhile, Kneifel and Brummer posted 12 kills apiece, and Marruffo recorded 15 digs.

Mount Holyoke (7-9, 0-5 NEWMAC) will return to action on Thursday, when it hosts New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe WPI at 7:00 p.m. Meanwhile, MCLA (9-7, 1-1 MASCAC) will entertain Bridgewater State University on Monday at 2:00 p.m., and Becker (5-14, 0-1 NECC) will visit Anna Maria College on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
