Volleyball Takes Part in Wildcat Fall Classic

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Oct. 2, 2010) – The Mount Holyoke College women's volleyball team took part in the 2010 Wildcat Fall Classic at Johnson & Wales University this weekend. After their 3-1 loss against Plymouth State University on Friday, the Lyons were blanked by both Johnson & Wales and Western Connecticut State University today.

Led by Tournament Most Valuable Player Sarah Lang-Rodean, Springfield College took first place with an overall record of 4-0. Senior setter Kateryna Kuc represented Mount Holyoke on the All-Tournament Team after totaling 58 assists in three matches. All 14 contests took place at the Harborside Recreation Center

Mount Holyoke took the first set in its match against Plymouth State before eventually falling 17-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-11. The Lyons were paced by Kuc, who delivered 26 assists. Sophomore outside hitter Morgan Cooley added nine kills in the contest.

In its first match on Saturday, Mount Holyoke was topped 25-15, 25-22, 25-12 by the host Wildcats. First years Martina Kneifel and Kristina Weld tallied eight and seven kills, respectively. Meanwhile, Kuc dished out 21 assists to go with three service aces. Classmate Rosa Marruffo posted 12 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Kathryn Brummer amassed five kills and nine digs.

Western Connecticut State handed the Lyons a 25-19, 25-16, 25-10 setback in their finale this afternoon. Kuc and Brummer collected five kills apiece to set the tone. The duo finished with 13 assists and 16 digs, respectively. Weld and Cooley contributed four kills apiece, and Marruffo added 10 digs.

Mount Holyoke (5-8, 0-4 NEWMAC) will resume its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) slate on Tuesday, when it hosts Clark University at 7:00 p.m.
