Volleyball Takes Down St. Joseph and Daniel Webster

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Sept. 11, 2010) – The Mount Holyoke College women's volleyball team picked up a pair of victories this afternoon at the Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium to improve to a perfect 3-0 on the year. After handing St. Joseph College a 3-0 setback, the Lyons picked up a thrilling 3-2 triumph over Daniel Webster College.

In its first contest of the day, Mount Holyoke breezed to a 3-0 win over St. Joseph. In the process, the Lyons avenged a 3-2 setback at St. Joseph's last fall. They have now downed the Blue Jays in six of the previous seven meetings between the programs. Outside hitters Martina Kneifel and Morgan Cooley delivered 10 kills apiece to lead the way. Kneifel also added nine digs, while senior setter Kateryna Kuc dished out 25 assists. Mount Holyoke also received solid production from defensive specialists Rosa Marruffo and Kara Neidhardt, who collected 12 and 11 digs, respectively.

The Lyons then faced off against Daniel Webster in what proved to be a match for the ages. After taking the first set, they dropped the next two before rebounding in the fourth. Trailing 14-12 in the fifth and deciding set, the hosts ran off the next three points to seal the come from behind victory. Kneifel was at it again, piling up her second double-double of the year on 11 kills and 21 digs. Kuc also finished with a double-double on 30 assists and 12 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Kathryn Brummer added 10 kills. Marruffo piled up 24 digs in the contest, while Cooley chipped in with seven kills. As a team, the Lyons totaled nine blocks.

Mount Holyoke (3-0, 0-0 NEWMAC) will return to action on Tuesday, when it kicks off its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) slate at MIT beginning at 7:00 p.m. Daniel Webster (2-1, 0-0 NECC) will open up its home schedule against Anna Maria College Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. Meanwhile, St. Joseph (1-4, 0-1 GNAC) will travel to Mitchell College for a contest starting at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
