Soccer Falls to Nationally-Ranked MIT in NEWMAC Play

Cambridge, Mass. - October 12, 2019 - The Mount Holyoke College soccer team fell to nationally-ranked MIT, 7-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play at Steinbrenner Stadium on Saturday evening.

With the loss, the Lyons are now 2-10-1 overall and 0-5 in NEWMAC play, while the Engineers, which were ranked No. 10 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division III National Rankings, improves to 10-1-2 on the year with a 4-0 mark against league opponents.

The Engineers posted a 47-1 shot advantage over 90 minutes of play, while Maria-Lucia Delgado (Bronx, N.Y.) was busy in between the pipes for the Lyons, as she totaled a career-best 16 saves in the loss. MIT also had 21 corner kicks over the course of the game.

After Allie Werner (Tyler, Texas) opened the scoring for MIT just 4:55 into the contest, the Engineers opened a 4-0 lead with three goals in a span of 1:37, as Sophia Struckman (Scottsdale, Ariz.) found the back of the net twice in that stretch, before Claire O'Callaghan (Sherborn, Mass.) capped the run with a finish to the right side of the net. With 13:12 to play in the stanza, MIT added its fifth of the first half when Emily Larson (Ankeny, Iowa) scored her fourth goal of the season.

Just 3:11 into the second half, Savannah Lawrence (Tucker, Ga.) scored her second goal of the season to make it 6-0, before Karenna Groff (Weston, Mass.) capped the scoring in the 59th minute.

Up next, Mount Holyoke College will return home on Tuesday, October 15 and will host Clark at 1 p.m.
