Soccer Falls to Emerson in Conference Opener

Boston, Mass. - September 21, 2019 - Playing in its first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest of the 2019 season, the Mount Holyoke College soccer team fell to Emerson at Rotch Field on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Lyons are now 1-5-1 overall and 0-1 in NEWMAC play, while Emerson improves to 7-1 on the year with a 1-0 mark against league opponents.

The Lions held a 33-1 shot advantage over 90 minutes of play, and were awarded 15 corner kicks. In net, Maria-Lucia Delgado (Bronx, N.Y.) made a career-high 13 saves, as she was tested with 21 shots on goal over 90 minutes of play.

The two sides battled back-and-forth until the Lions eventually broke through in the 14th minute when Cali Bruce (Glen Allen, Va.) set up Grace Cosgrove (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) for a goal to make it 1-0, before Cosgrove netted her second of the day just 2:24 later, this time on a feed from Veronica alberts (Half Moon Bay, Calif.).

Emerson scored twice more in a span of 1:20 as Ainslee MacQuarrie (Kensington, N.H.) found the back of the net on an assist from Kyler Gough (San Marcos, Calif.), before Cosgrove scored her third of the contest, this time on an assist from Jennifer Van Pelt (El Cerrito, Calif.), to make it 4-0 with 18:15 to play in the first half. 

Opening up the second half, Emerson's Kayla McNamara (Sunrise, Fla.) found the back of the net in the 52nd minute to make it 5-0, before Marie Bou Aziz (Miami, Fla.) took in a pass from Cosgrove and found the back of the net to push the Lions' lead to six with 29:55 to play in the game.

With 6:12 on the clock, Meghan MacPherson (Tualatin, Ore.) found the back of the net to make it 7-0, before Alexa Ingersoll (Oakland, Calif.) wrapped up the scoring after finishing a feed from Jenna Kase (Gaithersberg, Md.) with 3:19 on the clock.

Up next, Mount Holyoke College will return home on Wednesday, September 25 when it hosts a 6 p.m. contest with Mitchell in non-conference play.
