Soccer Battles to Scoreless Tie With Simmons in Season Opener

Boston, Mass. - August 31, 2019 - In its first contest of the season, the Mount Holyoke College soccer team battled to a 0-0 draw with Simmons College at Daly Field on Saturday afternoon. With the tie, the Lyons are now 0-0-1 on the year, while the Sharks are now 0-1-1. The Lyons had five shots on net over the course of the contest, three of which came in the first half.

In net, Maria-Lucia Delgado (Bronx, N.Y.) posted three saves over the course of the game, while her counterpart, Melanie Colman (Holliston, Mass.) also recorded three saves in 110 minutes of play.

After Simmons was awarded a pair of corner kicks in the opening stages of the game, the Lyons looked to get on the board as in the 12th minute, Cora Melcher (Portland, Maine) sent a shot high of the goal, before Carolina Alvarez (Miami, Fla.) followed suit in the 21st minute, with her bid getting turned away by Colman. Mount Holyoke had another chance in the 29th minute when Sarah Forster (Worcester, Mass.) put a chance on goal, but once again Colman rose to the occasion and kept the Lyons off the board.

Just 5:01 into the second half, Minerva Veeser-Bobea (Arlington, Mass.) got loose and put a shot on cage, which was turned away, before McKenna Lamb (Redlands, Calif.) had a shot in the 83rd minute that went just high. The Lyons were unable to get a shot off in the overtime periods, but played strong defense to escape with the scoreless tie.

Next up, Mount Holyoke will host Amherst College on Thursday, September 5 at the Mount Holyoke College Soccer Field. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m.
