Soccer Drops 4-0 Decision to Nationally-Ranked Wesleyan

Middletown, Conn. - October 22, 2019 - Despite a career-best 17-save performance from junior goalkeeper Maria-Lucia Delgado (Bronx, N.Y.), the Mount Holyoke College soccer team fell to host Wesleyan University, 4-0, at Smith Field on Tuesday evening.

With the loss, the Lyons are now 2-13-1 overall while the Cardinals, which were ranked No. 23 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division III National Rankings, improve to 9-2-2 on the year.

Wesleyan held a 48-0 shot advantage over 90 minutes of play, while the Cardinals were also awarded eight corner kicks over the course of teh game. 

The hosts opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Andi Wiley (Alameda, Calif.) found the back of the net on a play that was set up by Katie Stewart Frizzell (Costa Mesa, Calif.) to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead with 24:29 on the clock. 

With 3:00 left ot play in the first half, Grace Devanny (Concord, N.H.) snuck a shot past Delgado, before the first-year scored her second of the game just 1:21 later on an assist from Stewart Frizzell.

In the 54th minute, Wesleyan wrapped up their scoring as Danielle Soto (Washington, D.C.) produced an unassisted tally.

Up next, Mount Holyoke College will return to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday, October 26 when the Lyons travel to Wheaton for a 1 p.m. contest.
