Soccer Suffers 2-1 Setback at Smith

Northampton, Mass. - October 29, 2019 - The Mount Holyoke College soccer team fell to host Smith College, 2-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday afternoon. 

With the loss, the Lyons drop to 2-15-1 on the year with an 0-9 record in NEWMAC play, while Smith improves to 7-9-1 overall, with a 3-6 mark against league foes. Smith College held a 38-2 shot advantage over Mount Holyoke College in the 90-minute match, while the Pioneers also had 15 corner kicks compared to just one for the visitors.

In net, Brianna Thompson (El Cajon, Calif.) made her first start since September 25 and collected a career-best 15 saves in the setback.

After Smith College had the opening shot of the game just 42 seconds in, the Lyons countered and generated a shot on goal from Minerva Veeser-Bobea (Arlington, Mass.), but Pioneers goalkeeper Naomi Falkenberg (Sutton, Mass.) was able to make the stop to keep the game scoreless. 

After a scoreless first half, the Pioneers struck just 7:13 into the second as Peyton McBride (Manchester, N.H.) found the back of the net to give Smith a 1-0 lead. Just 3:54 later, Mount Holyoke College tied the game as Hannah Finn-Erb (Northampton, Mass.) subbed into the game and immediately set up Zoraida Ibarra (Los Olivos, Calif.), who scored her first-career goal to even the score at one.

The game was even for only 1:04 as Smith countered with a goal of their own, with Jessica Matsuoka (Redding, Conn.) setting up Etienne Oliver (Sandy, Ore.) for a strike that gave the Pioneers a 2-1 lead with 32:49 to play.

Smith College controlled the ball for the remainder of the game, sealing the 2-1 win.

Up next, Mount Holyoke College will return home for their final game of the season as the Lyons will host Babson at 1 p.m. on the MHC Soccer Field.
