Soccer Drops Non-Conference Decision with Western New England

Springfield, Mass. - September 10, 2019 - The Mount Holyoke College soccer team dropped a non-conference decision to Western New England University at Suprenant Field on Tuesday evening. With the loss, the Lyons drop to 1-2-1 on the year, while the Golden Bears improve to 2-1 with the victory.

Western New England held a 34-2 advantage in shots, and were awarded seven corner kicks compared to none for the Lyons. In net, Maria-Lucia Delgado (Bronx, N.Y.) played 58:19 and made eight saves, while Brianna Thompson (El Cajon, Calif.) came on for the final 31:41 and made two stops while only allowing one goal against.

The Golden Bears scored its first of the game just six minutes into the contest, as Mariana Goncalves (Ludlow, Mass.) gave Western New England a 1-0 lead, before Kristen Decost (Hudson, N.H.) found the back of the net in the 15th minute to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage.

With 25:19 to play in the first half, Bee Murphy (Monson, Mass.) scored her second goal of the season to put the Golden Bears up 3-0, a lead in which Western New England would carry into the halftime break.

The Golden Bears would push their advantage to four just 6:02 into the second half as Samantha Vitka (Stratford, Conn.) snuck a shot past Delgado, before Allyson Hill (Storrs, Conn.) made it 5-0 just 3:04 later.

Wrapping up the contest, Western New England scored twice in 2:25 as Goncalves added her second of the game before Danille McCarthy (Old Lyme, Conn.) wrapped up the scoring with the hosts' seventh goal of the game.

Up next, the Lyons will head to Elms on Saturday, September 14 for a 4 p.m. contest with the Blazers.
