Soccer Falls to Nationally-Ranked Amherst in Non-Conference Play

South Hadley, Mass. - September 5, 2019 - The Mount Holyoke College soccer team fell to nationally-ranked Amherst College, 6-0, at the MHC Soccer Field on Thursday evening. With the loss, the Lyons are now 0-1-1 overall, while the Mammoths, which was ranked No. 13 in the United Soccer Coaches Division III National Preseason Rankings, improves to 1-0 on the year.

In net for the Lyons, Maria-Lucia Delgado (Bronx, N.Y.) made four saves, while Brianna Thompson (El Cajon, Calif.) came on in relief and notched one stop. 

The Mammoths got on the board just 13:12 into the contest when Sophia Fikke (New York, N.Y.) sent a through ball past the Lyons' defense, which was caught up to by Alexa Juarez (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.), who slipped a shot past Delgado to make it 1-0. Juarez did it again on another nice through ball from Fikke in the 19th minute to give Amherst a 2-0 advantage.

With 18:33 to play in the first half, Amherst played a short corner kick to Isabel Stern (New York, N.Y.), who was able to chip a ball up into the air that Kata Heffron (Upper Brookville, N.Y.), who headed the shot over Delgado's hands, making it 3-0, Mammoths. 

In the second half, Amherst pushed its lead to four when Juarez netted her third of the game in the 57th minute, before Stern and Izzy Geneve (Marlboro, N.J.) both found the back of the net in the waning minutes to seal the 6-0 victory.

Up next, Mount Holyoke College will travel to SUNY Cobleskill for a 2 p.m. match on Saturday, September 7.
