Soccer Drops 4-2 Decision to Wellesley in NEWMAC Play

Wellesley, Mass. - September 28, 2019 - The Mount Holyoke College soccer team got off to a fast start but was eventually overcome by Wellesley College, as the Blue escaped with a 4-2 win in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Lyons fall to 2-6-1 overall and 0-2-0 in NEWMAC play, while the Blue improve to 4-5-0 on the season with a 1-1-0 mark against league opponents. Wellesley College held a 23-9 shot advantage over 90 minutes of play, as Wellesley was also awarded five corner kicks compared to the Lyons' one.

In net, Maria-Lucia Delgado (Bronx, N.Y.) finished with eight saves in the setback, while her counterpart, Olivia Reckley (Grosse Ile, Mich.) recorded four stops in the win.

Mount Holyoke College got off to a blistering start in the contest, as the Lyons scored a pair of goals just 44 seconds into the contest. Minerva Veeser-Bobea (Arlington, Mass.) opened the scoring with a goal just 22 seconds into the game that was assisted by Hannah Finn-Erb (Northampton, Mass.), before Lilydahn Stewart (Etna, N.H.) found the back of the net just 22 seconds after that to give the Lyons a 2-0 advantage over the Blue.

Following the two strikes, Wellesley put pressure back on the Lyons' net as the Blue posted three shots in a span of 3:46, one of which was turned away by Delgado. 

Midway through the first half, Wellesley got its first goal of the game as Thea Feldgoise (Brookline, Mass.) notched her seventh goal of the season to cut the Blue's deficit to one with 19:05 on the clock.

Wellesley was able to even the game with 1:29 remaining in the first half as Eliza Roy (Camden, Maine) notched her fourth goal of the season, assisted by Feldgoise.

From there, Paige Osborne (Philadelphia, Pa.) and McKenna Lamb (Redlands, Calif.) were both able to get shots on goal, but Reckly stood strong and turned both chances away as the game went into the break 2-2. 

Mount Holyoke College recorded three shots in the opening 7:28 of the second half, but the first two were just wide, before the third was stopped by Reckley. The Blue took a one-goal advantage in the 78th minute when Liz Zhou (McLean, Va.) buried a chance set up by Feldgoise, before a strike from Julia Jung (Oakland, Calif.) sealed the 4-2 win for Wellesley with 4:02 remaining.

Up next, Mount Holyoke College will travel to RPI for a 7:30 p.m. contest on Wednesday, October 2.
