Rimando leads track and field with three top-three performances at Tufts invitational

MEDFORD, Mass. -- First-year Elle Rimando placed in the top three in three events to lead the Mount Holyoke track and field team to seventh place out of 17 teams competing at the Branwen Smith-King Invitational on Saturday at Tufts University.

Mount Holyoke scored 44 team points with top-eight finishes in seven events, seventh-most out of 17 teams at the meet.

Rimando (Mililani, Hawaii) finished second out of 11 athletes in the triple jump with a top distance of 10.73 meters (35'2.5"). Rimando long-jumped 5.00 meters, or 16'5.5", placing third out of 27 competitors in the event. Rimando finished second out of 29 athletes in the 60-meter dash with a finals time of 8.20 seconds, after posting a preliminary time of 8.19.

Other scoring efforts by the Lyons included:

  • Senior Emma Doyle (West Lebanon, N.H.) scored in two events. The team captain placed second out of 40 competitors in the shot put with a top effort of 11.11 meters (36'5.5"). Doyle also placed seventh out of 32 athletes in the weight throw at 11.90 meters (39'0.5").
  • Sophomore Tessa Lancaster (Mansfield, Mass.) placed fifth out of 34 runners in the 3,000-meter run, with a time of 10:49.57
  • Mount Holyoke also scored eight team points with a second-place finish out of five squads in the 4x800 relay. Sophomore Kim Beaver (Agawam, Mass.), senior Devan Ravino (West Kingston, R.I.), Lancaster, and sophomore Olivia Johnson (Mount Desert, Maine) finished the race in 10:33.93.

Rimando shot into third place on Mount Holyoke's all-time team performance list in the triple jump, and she leaped from 10th place into sixth in the long jump. Rimando remains second in team history in the 60-meter dash (8.18 seconds).

The Lyons will next compete Saturday, Jan. 28 at the Wesleyan Invitational in Middletown, Conn.
