Trapp, Doyle highlight track and field's day at Westfield State invite

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College track and field team performed well Saturday at the Jerry Gravel Invitational at Westfield State University, a non-scoring meet including Wheaton, Salve Regina, UMass-Dartmouth, Utica and Westfield State.

Sophomore Greta Trapp (La Crosse, Wis.) produced Mount Holyoke's lone event win, taking first place out of eight runners in the 5,000 meters, finishing in 20:15.93.

Senior Emma Doyle (West Lebanon, N.H.) posted a career-best discus throw of 35.36 meters (116'0"), placing second among 18 competitors and moving from sixth place to fourth place on Mount Holyoke's all-time performance list. Doyle passed Gloria Brown from 1996 (34.73m) and Amy Willard from 2004 (34.84m) on the MHC discus list.

Doyle didn't compete in her best event, the shot put, but she did also place eighth out of 18 athletes in the hammer throw (35.73 meters/117'3").

Other top-eight performances on the day by Mount Holyoke athletes included:

  • Sophomore Olivia Johnson (Mount Desert, Maine) placed third in the 5,000 meters in 20:45.84, while first-year Maya Evans (Topsfield, Mass.) placed fourth (21:12.88).
  • Senior Devan Ravino (West Kingston, R.I.) took fourth place out of eight runners in the 400 meters, with a time of 1:06.03.
  • Sophomore Aria Mallare (Chicago, Ill.) placed seventh out of 13 competitors in the 100-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 13.59 seconds. Mallare also placed eighth out of 18 runners in the 200 meters, winning her section of the event in 28.89 seconds.
  • Sophomore Cynthia Akanaga (Imo, Nigeria) placed eighth in the 400 meters (1:13.34).
  • Senior Lucy Sternberg (Stonington, Conn.) took eighth place in the triple jump (9.45 meters/31'0").
  • First-year Kristina Busby (Freeville, N.Y.) placed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (19.71).
  • Senior Sara Robillard (Delran, N.J.) placed sixth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:28.66).

The Lyons will compete next Saturday at Wellesley College for the first annual Mount Holyoke-Smith-Wellesley Tri-Meet.
