Doyle, Rimando stand out as track and field gets early start on indoor season

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Senior captain Emma Doyle moved up on the Mount Holyoke College indoor track and field all-time performance lists in both the shot put and weight throw, and first-year Elle Rimando entered the team's all-time top-10 lists in two other events to highlight the Lyons' season-opening efforts at Smith College's Mary Grinaker Invitational on Saturday.

Although the meet was non-scoring, Doyle (West Lebanon, N.H.) ranked second among 22 competitors in the shot put with a top effort of 11.31 meters, 0.96 meters beyond her previous personal-best mark of 10.35. Doyle's effort vaulted her past Shante Henderson from fifth place to fourth on the Lyons' all-time list.

Doyle also placed second in the weight throw at 12.73 meters, 1.43 meters beyond her previous best, to move from eighth place to fourth among all-time Lyons, leapfrogging Lyon alums Gretchen Sminkey (11.83), Miriam Larson-Koester (12.27) and Jennie Ochterski (12.40), as well as teammate Kara Setal (12.20).

Rimando (Mililani, Hawaii) recorded the second-fastest 60-meter dash in Mount Holyoke history, racing 8.18 seconds in the final after a preliminary heat time of 8.24 seconds. Rimando trailed only Smith's Daniela Pilier (8.16) in the event finals. Rimando passed Jacinta Edebeli (8.22) to claim second place on Mount Holyoke's all-time list in the event, trailing only Camille Coklow's record time of 7.62 seconds.

Rimando also joined Mount Holyoke's all-time performance list in the long jump in 10th place with her effort of 4.59 meters, the third best in the field on the day, following four fouls.

Other top performances by Mount Holyoke athletes included:

  • Sophomore Lize Brown (New London, Conn.) was eighth in the shot put (8.89 meters) and sixth in the weight throw (8.89 meters).
  • Sophomore Erin Siegel (San Diego, Calif.) placed fourth in the weight throw (9.48 meters) and was also ninth in the shot put (8.36 meters).
  • Senior captain Lucy Sternberg (Stonington, Conn.) went 4.07 meters in the long jump, sixth best in the field.

Mount Holyoke will next compete Jan. 20-21 at Tufts University for the Branwen Smith-King Invitational.
