NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Mount Holyoke College sophomore Tessa Lancaster nearly matched her career-best time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase despite high-temperature conditions Friday evening at the Connecticut College Silfen Invitational, finishing third out of nine runners.
Lancaster (Mansfield, Mass.), running her first steeplechase of the season, finished in 11:50.87, well ahead of the fourth-place runner and trailing only Ellie Murphy-Weise of Wellesley (11:17.54) and Stephanie Ager of Wesleyan (11:35.98).
Lancaster's time was less than five seconds behind her career-best and would rank 60th in Division III entering the weekend. It was also nearly four seconds faster than her time in the same event at the same meet one year ago.
Lancaster's teammates on the Lyons track and field team will compete Saturday at the Westfield State Jerry Gravel Invitational.
