NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The College Squash Association (CSA) has announced its weekly award winners and Mount Holyoke College student-athlete Kathryn Brummer was named the Harrow Sports Women's Player of the Week. A senior captain, she played a critical role in securing the Lyons seventh consecutive Seven Sisters Championship title.
Trailing 3-4 in the middle match against Wellesley on Saturday, Brummer came through with a crucial 12-10, 11-7, 11-2 win over Wellesley's Margo Sulmont. Her victory evened the score and changed the momentum for the Lyons. Brummer opened the tournament with an 11-1, 11-2, 11-3 win over Smith's Haruka Shimoto as MHC rolled to a 9-0 team victory.
Brummer, who is a native of Massapequa Park, N.Y., capped the day's events with an 11-2, 11-3, 11-9 win over Vassar's Avery Siciliano as the Lyons completed the day with a 9-0 victory against the Brewers. In addition to going undefeated from the fifth position on the day, Brummer was also named to the Seven Sisters All-Tournament Team.
This is the second career CSA Weekly Honor for Brummer, who was also honored during her junior season. In her career, the two-time captain has posted a 42-28 record. She has helped the Lyons to a 53-39 record in that time. As a junior, Brummer posted a 19-10 record, including a 7-0 mark from the fourth position. She represented MHC at the CSA Individual Nationals and finished the year ranked 140th in the nation.
As a sophomore, the Long Island Lutheran graduate was 13-12. In addition to going 6-9 at the sixth position and 5-3 from the seventh position, she helped the team record a 6-3 win over Middlebury at CSA National Quarterfinals. During her rookie campaign, Brummer was 3-1.
A two-time captain and standout on the Mount Holyoke volleyball team, Brummer began playing squash upon her arrival at MHC. Prior to her collegiate career, she was a five-year member of the volleyball team, serving as captain. In addition to earning PSAA Most Valuable Player honors twice, she was her squad's Most Valuable Player during her senior year.
Brummer, who is a biology and psychology major, has also served as the chair of the MHC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Additionally, she is a 2012 Student Leadership and Service Award recipient.
Mount Holyoke (8-7) is back on the courts on Wednesday when it hosts #16 Amherst at the MHC Squash Courts beginning at 6pm. The Lyons will also compete at the Division III Nationals, which begin on Friday and run through Sunday at Bowdoin College.
