#20 Springfield Tops Volleyball

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Oct. 25, 2011) – The Mount Holyoke College volleyball team fell 3-0 to nationally ranked Springfield College this evening at the Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium. With their win, the Pride secured the top seed in next week's NEWMAC Tournament. They entered the contest ranked 20th in the latest AVCA National Poll.

Sarah Martin Mount Holyoke was paced by sophomore outside hitter Martina Kneifel, who collected three kills and nine digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Yejin Lee and first year libero Kaleen Iwema recorded digs apiece, while first year setter Mollyanne Fitzpatrick added four assists.

Senior middle blocker Lauren Torvi tallied 10 kills to set the tone for Springfield. Classmate Kim Giaquinto amassed seven kills, while first year setter Whitney Miller dished out 26 assists. The Pride also received a boost from senior libero Itza Nieves, who totaled nine digs. Both Torvi and junior middle blocker Mary Consol registered four blocks for the guests..

Both squads will round out their regular season schedules on the road against conference opponents on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Mount Holyoke (9-15, 2-6 NEWMAC) will travel to Babson College, while Springfield (28-2, 7-1 NEWMAC) will visit Wheaton College. The Lyons have been eliminated from postseason contention.
