Volleyball Drops Pair on Second Day of Seven Sisters Championship

WELLESLEY, Mass. (Oct. 9, 2011) – The Mount Holyoke College volleyball team sustained a pair of 3-0 setbacks during the second and final day of the 2011 Seven Sisters Championship at Wellesley College. After falling to Vassar College, the Lyons were downed by Bryn Mawr College. They went winless in four matches this weekend.

Kaleen Iwema Sophomore outside hitter Martina Kneifel and first year defensive specialist Kaleen Iwema were named to the All-Tournament Team as a result of their outstanding performances over the course of the event. Kneifel racked up 2.36 kills per set to set the tone for the Lyons. Meanwhile, Iwema averaged 4.83 digs per set.

Wellesley cruised to a 3-0 triumph over Vassar in the final match of the weekend to clinch the championship. Since the tournament began in 1983, the Blue have earned 11 titles. Mount Holyoke and Smith have come out on top five times apiece. Meanwhile, Vassar has prevailed on three occasions.

Sydney Carfagno earned Tournament Most Valuable Player honors after posting a hitting percentage of .500 for Wellesley. She was joined on the All-Tournament Team by teammate Amanda Duritsch, Katie Merrill and Mikecia Witherspoon  of Bryn Mawr, Rosa Drummond and Blair Bell of Smith College and Amy Bavosa and Marie Pitre of Vassar.

Mount Holyoke fell to Vassar in its first match of the day. Junior outside hitter Kathryn Brummer posted six kills to lead the way. Kneifel and senior Tyler Protano-Goodwin recorded five kills apiece. Meanwhile, first year setter Alison Chu chipped in with 11 digs.

Kneifel registered 10 kills and 18 digs in the Lyons final outing of the weekend against Bryn Mawr. It was her third double-double of the year and ninth of her career. Brummer recorded six kills and 10 digs, while Chu and classmate Mollyanne Fitzpatrick dished out 10 and 14 assists, respectively. Iwema amassed 14 digs to round things out for the Lyons.

Mount Holyoke (7-9, 1-4 NEWMAC) will resume its NEWMAC schedule on Thursday, when it visits WPI at 7:00 p.m.
