Volleyball Opens 2011 Season With Split

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (Sept. 10, 2011) – The Mount Holyoke College volleyball team opened its 2011 season with a pair of matches at Saint Joseph College this afternoon. After falling 3-0 to Daniel Webster College, the Lyons rebounded with a 3-1 triumph over Saint Joseph.

Martina Kneifel In its first contest of the day, Mount Holyoke was blanked by Daniel Webster (4-0, 0-0 NECC). Junior outside hitter Kathryn Brummer collected eight kills and eight digs to lead the way for the Lyons. Sophomore outside hitter Martina Kneifel totaled five kills, while first year setter Alison Chu and sophomore middle hitter Kristina Weld added four apiece. Chu made an immediate impact in her collegiate debut, posting 10 assists and 11 digs for her collegiate double-double. Senior middle hitter Tyler Protano-Goodwin figured in on all five of Mount Holyoke's blocks.

The Lyons bounced back with a 3-1 victory over Saint Joseph (1-5, 0-0 GNAC) in their second match. After falling in the first set, they won the next three to secure their second straight win over the Blue Jays. Kneifel and Brummer each recorded double-doubles to set the tone for the visitors. Kneifel finished with a team best 13 kills to go with 10 digs. She also piled up five of Mount Holyoke's 18 service aces. The outside hitter ran her career double-double total to seven. Meanwhile, Brummer's fourth career double-double included 10 kills and 12 digs. Chu dished out 19 assists, while classmate Mollyanne Fitzpatrick chipped in with 15. Fellow first year Kaleen Iwema totaled nine digs and five aces.

Mount Holyoke (1-1, 0-0 NEWMAC) will kick off its NEWMAC slate at home against MIT on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
