WELLESLEY, Mass. (Oct. 8, 2011) – The Mount Holyoke College volleyball team suffered a pair of 3-0 setbacks on the opening day of the 2011 Seven Sisters Championship at Wellesley College. After falling to Smith College, the Lyons were upended by Wellesley. They will look to rebound tomorrow, when they close out the weekend with matches against Vassar College at 9:00 a.m. and Bryn Mawr College at 11:30 a.m.
Sophomore outside hitter Martina Kneifel recorded six kills and nine digs to set the tone for Mount Holyoke in its first contest of the weekend against Smith. The Lyons also received a boost from first year defensive specialist Kaleen Iwema, who amassed 22 digs and a pair of service aces. Meanwhile, first year setter Mollyanne Fitzpatrick dished out five assists.
Kneifel once again led the way for Mount Holyoke in its match against Wellesley. In addition to posting five kills, she also collected nine digs. Iwema totaled 15 digs, while Fitzpatrick added nine assists. Junior outside hitter Kathryn Brummer and sophomore middle hitter Kristina Weld chipped in with three kills apiece.
Wellesley and Vassar College will enter the final day of the tournament with perfect 2-0 records. They hold a narrow lead over Smith, which went 1-1 today. Mount Holyoke (7-6, 1-4 NEWMAC) and Bryn Mawr College will both be looking for their first wins.
