Volleyball Drops a Pair at LEC / NEWMAC Challenge

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (Oct. 15, 2011) – The Mount Holyoke College volleyball team suffered a pair of 3-0 setbacks during the fourth annual LEC / NEWMAC Challenge today at Smith College. After falling to Keene State College, the Lyons were downed by Plymouth State University. Keene State and Plymouth State also upended Smith. All four matches took place at Ainsworth Gymnasium.

Alison Chu Sophomore outside hitter Martina Kneifel continued her outstanding play with 10 kills and 12 digs in Mount Holyoke's opener against Keene State (11-10, 3-1 LEC). It was her fourth double-double of the year and 10th of her career. First year setter Mollyanne Fitzpatrick also recorded a double-double on 12 assists and 14 digs. Meanwhile, first year defensive specialist Kaleen Iwema chipped in with 20 digs. Senior middle hitter Tyler Protano-Goodwin and first year setter Alison Chu added four kills and nine assists, respectively.

Kneifel recorded six kills, 10 digs and a pair of service aces against Plymouth State (17-8, 3-1 LEC). Protano-Goodwin, junior outside hitter Kathryn Brummer and sophomore middle hitter Kristina Weld sent down four kills apiece. Meanwhile, Fitzpatrick and Chu combined for 18 assists, and Iwema registered nine digs.

The Lyons (7-12, 1-5 NEWMAC) will look to put an end to their eight-match slide on Tuesday, when they host longtime rival Smith for a NEWMAC match beginning at 7:00 p.m.
