Volleyball Comes From Behind to Defeat Wheaton

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Sept. 17, 2011) – Using a balanced attack, the Mount Holyoke College volleyball team topped NEWMAC foe Wheaton College this afternoon at the Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium. After dropping the first set, the Lyons swept the next three to seal their first win over Wheaton since the 2006 season. With their second straight win, they improved to 3-2 on the year. Wheaton fell to 2-9.

Kathryn Brummer Sophomore outside hitter Martina Kneifel racked up 17 kills, 22 digs and four service aces to set the tone for Mount Holyoke. It was her second double-double of the year and eighth of her career. Most of Kneifel's winners were set up by first year setters Mollyanne Fitzpatrick and Alison Chu, who combined for 44 assists. Fitzpatrick finished with 27, while Chu added 17.

Junior outside hitter Kathryn Brummer posted 10 kills, while first year libero Kaleen Iwema piled up 29 digs. Middle hitters Kristina Weld and Tyler Protano-Goodwin added seven kills apiece.

Wheaton was paced by sophomore middle hitter Lindsay Tebbetts, who tallied 16 kills. Senior defensive specialist Emily Davisson recorded 26 digs, while junior setter Olanna Nissim dished out 29 assists.

Both squads will resume their NEWMAC schedules at home on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. Mount Holyoke (3-2, 1-1 NEWMAC) will face off against the Coast Guard Academy, while Wheaton (2-9, 0-2 NEWMAC) will take on Smith College.
