WPI Blanks Volleyball in NEWMAC Showdown

WORCESTER, Mass. (Oct. 13, 2011) – The Mount Holyoke College volleyball team sustained a 3-0 setback to WPI this evening in NEWMAC action at Harrington Auditorium. Sophomore outside hitter Martina Kneifel set the tone for the Lyons with eight kills, six digs and four block assists.

Tyler Protano-Goodwin Mount Holyoke also received solid production from first year defensive specialists Samantha Rosado and Kaleen Iwema, who amassed eight and seven digs, respectively. Classmates Mollyanne Fitzpatrick and Alison Chu combined for nine assists. Meanwhile, senior middle hitter Tyler Protano-Goodwin chipped in with three block assists.

WPI (15-5, 4-2 NEWMAC) was paced by junior outside hitters Bailey Sarber and Belinda Nwagbara, who teamed up for 15 kills without an error. Junior setter Alex Rangel rattled off seven service aces and 15 assists. Meanwhile, senior libero Joan Porambo racked up 15 digs.

Mount Holyoke (7-10, 1-5 NEWMAC) is slated to participate in the Little East / NEWMAC Challenge at Smith College on Saturday. After facing off against Keene State College at noon, the Lyons will take on Plymouth State University at 2:00 p.m.
