Mendiola Earns Performer of the Week Honors for Third Straight Week

TROY, N.Y. (Oct. 1, 2012) – The Liberty League has announced its weekly award winners in golf and for the third straight week, Mount Holyoke College student-athlete Madi Mendiola was tabbed as the Performer of the Week.

The sophomore from San Diego, Calif., shot a combined 155 to finish second overall at the Middlebury Invitational to lead all Liberty League golfers. She shot a 79 on day one at the Par 71 course at Ralph Myhre Golf Course to finish tied for second. Mendiola then bettered her score with a 76 on day one. She finished just two strokes out of first-place.

A three-time Liberty League Performer of the Week, Mendiola was eight strokes better than her nearest conference competitor at Middlebury. She earned the honor last week after finishing fifth overall at the Lyons' own Mount Holyoke Invitational. During that meet, she also shot a combined 155.

Mendiola opened the season at the NYU Invitational with a fifth-place (157) finish to earn her first Liberty League weekly honor. Through three invitationals, the former Rancho Bernardo High School standout continues to be among the best in the country. Currently, she is tied for 18th-ranked player in Division III alongside Williams' Georgiana Salant and Middlebury's Keely Levins – both of whom Mendiola has squared off against over the last three weeks.

In 2011, her first collegiate season, Mendiola posted the second best scoring average in school history (81.27). In addition to five top-ten finishes, she ended the season ranked 12th in the region.

Mount Holyoke returns to the course this weekend at the 2012 Williams College Fall Invitational. Action begins on Saturday and runs through Sunday.
