South Hadley, Mass. - November 5, 2019 - The Mount Holyoke College field hockey team has earned the No. 6 seed in the upcoming New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Tournament, and will travel to No. 3 WPI on Tuesday, November 5. The contest between the Lyons and the Engineers is set to begin at 7 p.m. at Alumni Stadium. This marks the 21st-consecutive season that Mount Holyoke College earned a spot in the conference tournament.
Mount Holyoke College earned conference victories over Smith College, Springfield College and Wheaton College during the 2019 season en route to claiming the sixth seed in the NEWMAC Championship Tournament, and will take on WPI for the second time in four days, as the Lyons took on the Engineers in their regular-season final this past Saturday. In that contest, Mount Holyoke College struck first with a goal from Kylie Brooks (Oceanside, Calif.) just 4:07 into the second half, but WPI would go on to score three unanswered goals and defeat the Lyons, 3-1.
This will be the first meeting in the NEWMAC Championship Tournament for these two squads since the 1999 season when Mount Holyoke College came away with a 2-1 victory in the Semifinals. Overall, the two sides have met 34 times dating back to 1988 with the Engineers producing 19 wins in the series compared to just 15 for the Lyons, with Mount Holyoke College emerging victorious in five of the last seven meetings.
Junior forward Mirei Golding-Powers (San Francisco, Calif.) has led the Lyons all season offensively, as the International Relations major has produced 25 points on eight goals and nine assists. Sophomore Margaret Robb (Summit, N.J.) has tallied 24 points for the Lyons so far this season on nine goals and six assists, while classmate Kass Lawrence (Holyoke, Mass.) is just behind with 23 points on 11 goals and one helper. Rounding out the four Mount Holyoke College student-athletes with 20 or more points this year, Brooks has scored six goals in the last five games, pushing her season total to 20 points on nine goals and two assists.
Defensively, the Lyons are led by the duo of sophomore Phoebe Aaronson (Mountain View, Calif.) and junior Chelsea Braz (Coventry, Conn.), who have led a Mount Holyoke College defensive unit that ranks fourth in the conference in defensive saves with seven. In net, senior goalkeeper Morgan Turner (Chester, N.J.) ranks second in the NEWMAC with 118 saves.
