South Hadley, Mass. - September 5, 2019 - The Mount Holyoke College field hockey team suffered a 5-1 setback to nationally-ranked Amherst College on Thursday evening at the MHC Turf and Track Complex. With the loss, the Lyons are now 1-1 on the year, while Amherst, which was No. 20 in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III National Rankings, improves to 1-0 overall.

Sophomore Margaret Robb (Summit, N.J.) had the lone goal for the Lyons, as it was off of assists from Laurissa Montigny (Enfield, Conn.) and Mirei Golding-Powers (San Francisco, Calif.). In net for Mount Holyoke College, senior Morgan Turner (Chester, N.J.) posted 12 saves in the loss.

Amherst held a 32-11 shot advantage over 60 minutes of play, while the Mammoths were also awarded 11 penalty corners to the Lyons' seven.

Amherst scored the lone goal of the first quarter, as Laura Schwartzman (Darien, Conn.) fired in a penalty corner to Beth Williamson (Greenwich, Conn.), who blasted a shot from the top of the arch past Turner to make it 1-0.

Amherst pushed its lead to a pair just 3:55 into the second quarter as Heather Brennan (Encinitas, Calif.) found the back of the net on an assist from Natalie Hobb (Wilmington, Del.). The Lyons cut their deficit in half just 2:42 later when Golding-Powers sent in a penalty corner which was stopped at the top of the arch by Montigny. Seconds later, Robb came through and fired one that found its way to the back of the net to get Mount Holyoke College on the board.

With 3:41 to play in the first half, Amherst pushed its lead back to a pair when Franny Daniels (Essex, Conn.) scored in transition, before goals from Caroline Donahue (Weston, Mass.) and Hobbs finished off the scoring to seal the 5-1 win.

Mount Holyoke College will return to the MHC Turf and Track Complex on Saturday, September 7 when it hosts Worcester State at 1 p.m.
