South Hadley, Mass. - September 7, 2019 - The Mount Holyoke College field hockey team fell to visiting Worcester State, 5-0, in non-conference action at the MHC Turf and Track Complex on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, Mount Holyoke drops to 1-2, while the Lancers improve to 4-0. The Lyons posted 18 shots compared to Worcester State's 17, as the hosts held a 14-8 margin in the second half of play.
In net, the Lyons used all four goalies, as Emilie Warren (North Reading, Mass.) played 26:03 and made two stops, while Gianna Molinari (Windsor Locks, Conn.) came in for the final 3:40 and made one stop.
Worcester State struck first as Rachel Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) took a shot on cage, which was initially stopped by Turner, but the senior followed up her own bid and collected the rebound before sliding her second opportunity into the back of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage. With less than 30 seconds to play in the frame, the Lancers pushed its lead to a pair when Carly Duff (Warren, Mass.) ripped a shot on net, which was tipped redirected by Katelyn Santos (Acushnet, Mass.) to the stick of of Olivia Antonelli (Westford, Mass.), who was able to net her first of the game.
The Lancers added to its lead in the second quarter as Antonelli scored her second of the game with 6:46 left in the first half. Hopkins carried the ball into the Lyons' defensive territory before sliding a pass to Sophia Monopoli (Worcester, Mass.), who was able to catch up to the ball before centering a pass to Antonelli, who fired a shot into the back of the net to make it 3-0, Worcester State.
Worcester State made it a four-goal game just 4:31 into the third quarter when a foul in the arch resulted in a penalty stroke for the Lancers. Stepping up to take the stroke, Antonelli lifted a shot past Warren and into the top of the net to make it 4-0, visitors, with 10:29 left in the third quarter. Worcester State continued to find the back of the net in the third quarter as Sarah Bjorn (Holden, Mass.) got in the scoring column when Antonelli sent in a penalty corner before it was stopped by Duff, collected by Cassidy Windler (Holden, Mass.), and snuck over to Bjorn, who blasted a shot into the back of the net to make it 5-0.
The fourth quarter featured back-and-forth play, as the Lyons were able to defend three penalty corners granted to the Lancers, and at the offensive end, put together its best opportunities of the day. With under five minutes to play, both Kylie Brooks (Oceanside, Calif.) and Laurissa Montigny (Enfield, Conn.) had chances, but were turned away.
