South Hadley, Mass. - October 19, 2019 - The Mount Holyoke College field hockey team produced three fourth-quarter goals en route to a come-from-behind victory over Wheaton, 3-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon at the MHC Turf and Track Complex.
Recognizing the three members of its senior class prior to the contest, Mount Holyoke College improves to 7-8 overall and 2-4 in NEWMAC play, while the visitors drop to 2-10 on the year with an 0-5 mark against league opponents. The Lyons held a 41-7 shot advantage over 60 minutes of play, and were awarded 18 penalty corners compared to Wheaton's three.
In net, Morgan Turner (Chester, N.J.) made three saves in her seventh win of the year, while her counterpart, Morgan Karnes (Durham, Maine) made 12 stops in the setback.
After a flurry of chances to open the game, including scoring opportunities from Kylie Brooks (Oceanside, Calif.) and Margaret Robb (Summit, N.J.), Wheaton's Hannah Arkin (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) carried the ball the length of the field before sliding a pass to Karin Dion (Cumberland, R..) for the opening tally of the game, giving the Lyons a 1-0 advantage just 2:38 into the contest.
With just under three minutes to play in the frame, the Lyons looked to even the score at one when Robb ripped a shot on cage, which was blocked, but the rebound went right to Brooks, who hit the post with her point-blank chance before Wheaton's defense was able to clear the ball and keep Mount Holyoke College off the board.
The Lyons continued to pressure Wheaton's net with 12 shots and five penalty corners in the second quarter, but Karnes and the Wheaton defense held tough, as the senior was able to produce 11 of her 12 saves in the first half of play.
After a scoreless third quarter, Mount Holyoke College scored a pair of goals in the first 3:27 of the fourth quarter as Brooks got the scoring started after finishing a feed from Mirei Golding-Powers (San Francisco, Calif.) with 13:47 to play, before Kass Lawrence (Holyoke, Mass.) converted a chance off of a rebound that was set up by a shot from Robb with 11:33 on the clock.
The Lyons got an insurance tally from Brooks with 3:44 to play as Mollee Malboeuf (Fitchburg, Mass.) shot a ball into the arch, which found the stick of Brooks, who fired a shot into the net for her second marker of the game that gave Mount Holyoke College a 3-1 lead. Wheaton would attack the Lyons' net one more time, but Turner and the defense were able to keep them contained and seal the 3-1 conference victory.
Up next, Mount Holyoke College will travel to Smith College for another NEWMAC contest on Saturday, October 26. The contest is set to begin at 1 p.m.
