Cambridge, Mass. - September 28, 2019 - Playing its first away contest of the 2019 season, the Mount Holyoke College field hockey team fell to MIT, 6-2, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon at Jack Barry Field.
With the loss, the Lyons are now 3-5 overall and 0-2 in league play, while the Engineers improve to 5-4 on the year with a 1-1 record against NEWMAC opponents. MIT held a 19-8 shot advantage over 60 minutes of play, as the Lyons were granted 13 penalty corners, including nine in the fourth quarter. In net, Morgan Turner (Chester, N.J.) registered nine saves in the setback.
MIT opened the day's scoring with a strike from Devon Goetz (Rockville, Md.) just 1:56 into the second quarter, before the Lyons evened the score just 2:26 later when Margaret Robb (Summit, N.J.) registered her third goal of the season, as the sophomore controlled a loose ball in the arch and blistered one into the back of the net with 10:38 remaining in the quarter.
With just over four minutes remaining in the first half, the Engineers took a one-goal lead as Mia Rielly (Los Angeles, Calif.) ripped a shot on net, which was saved by Turner, but Amanda Garofalo (Fairfield, N.J.) was the first to the rebound and slipped it into the back of the net to give MIT a 2-1 lead prior to the halftime break.
Opening the second half of play, MIT took a two-goal advantage as Paige Forester (Glencoe, Ill.) scored on a rebound following a shot from Goetz with 13:39 left in the third quarter. Just 1:42 later, Mount Holyoke College pulled back to within one goal as Kylie Brooks (Oceanside, Calif.) got a shot off, which was saved, but Kass Lawrence (Holyoke, Mass.) was there for the rebound and found the back of the net to make it 3-2, Engineers, with 11:57 remaining in the stanza.
From there, the Engineers would rebuild their two-goal advantage as Forester found the back of the net again with 7:37 to play in the third quarter.
Forester would add two more goals in the fourth quarter, as the Engineers were able to pull away for the 6-2 victory. Forester completed her hat trick with 9:01 to play when she scored off of a penalty corner, before notching her fourth of the game just 3:27 later when she converted a chance and snuck a shot past Turner to seal the win.
Up next, Mount Holyoke College will return home to the MHC Turf and Track Complex and will host Springfield College in NEWMAC play at 7 p.m.
