South Hadley, Mass. - September 17, 2019 - Despite goals from sophomores Kass Lawrence (Holyoke, Mass.) and Margaret Robb (Summit, N.J.), the Mount Holyoke College field hockey team fell to visiting Wesleyan College, 5-2, on Tuesday evening at the MHC Turf and Track Complex.
With the loss, the Lyons are now 2-3 overall, while the Cardinals improve to 3-2 on the year with the win. Wesleyan held a 26-15 shot advantage over 60 minutes of play, while the Cardinals were also awarded eight penalty corners compared to just seven for Mount Holyoke College. In net, Morgan Turner (Chester, N.J.) had a 10-save performance, while for Wesleyan, Delaney Wood (Winslow, Maine) earned the win with six saves. Sophomore Laurissa Montigny (Enfield, Conn.) was also credited with a pair of defensive saves for the Lyons.
Wesleyan jumped on the board just 6:46 into the contest as Nikki Gerjarusak (Wayland, Mass.) fired a pass across the arch, which found the stick of Amy Schaap (KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa), who chipped the ball into the back of the net to make it 1-0. The Cardinals pushed their lead to a pair just 1:32 later when Schaap took a shot on cage, which was stopped by Turner, but Leah Ewers (Pittsburgh, Pa.) got the rebound and slipped a shot into the back of the net to make it 2-0 with 6:42 to play in the first half.
Mount Holyoke College got on the board just 3:23 into the second quarter as Lawrence scored her second goal in as many games. The sophomore collected a loose ball in front of the net and slipped a shot between the legs of Wood to make it 2-1. Just 3:57 later, the Lyons evened the game at two goals apiece when a penalty corner resulted in a shot being taken from Mirei Golding-Powers (San Francisco, Calif.), which was saved by Wood, but Robb got the rebound and found the back of the net to make it 2-2 with 7:40 to play in the half.
With 10:26 to play in the third quarter, Wesleyan wrestled back the lead as Colleen Carrigan (Lansdale, Pa.) took the ball at the top of the arch off of a restart, took one step to her right and drilled a shot through the legs of Turner to make it 3-2 just 4:34 into the frame. The Cardinals regained a two-goal lead with 9:52 remaining when Carrigan fired a shot on cage, which was saved by Turner, but Gerjarusak picked up the rebound and found the back of the net to make it 4-2.
Finishing off the contest, Wesleyan added its fifth goal of the game as Erica Horowitz (Longmeadow, Mass.) was able to tip a shot past Turner to seal the 5-2 win for the Cardinals.
Up next, Mount Holyoke College will return to the MHC Turf and Track Complex on Saturday, September 21 and will open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play against Clark at 1 p.m.
