South Hadley, Mass. - October 1, 2019 - Behind a two-goal effort from sophomore midfielder Margaret Robb (Summit, N.J.), the Mount Holyoke College field hockey team defeated Springfield College, 2-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play at the MHC Turf and Track Complex on Tuesday evening.
With the win, the Lyons are now 4-5 overall and 1-2 in NEWMAC play, while the Pride falls to 6-4 on the year with an 0-2 mark against conference opponents. Mount Holyoke College held a 16-12 shot advantage over Springfield College in 60 minutes of play, and was also awarded nine penalty corners compared to the Pride's six.
In net for Mount Holyoke College, senior Morgan Turner (Chester, N.J.) picked up five saves en route to her fourth win of the season, while her counterpart, Elizabeth Morehouse (North Attleboro, Mass.) had four saves in the setback.
After back-and-forth play for a majority of the first half, Mount Holyoke College got the first chance with 6:06 on the clock as Kass Lawrence (Holyoke, Mass.) sent a shot just wide of the cage. In response, the Pride had a flurry of chances in the late minutes of the first quarter, the best coming from Belle Copponi (Dover, Mass.), who had a point-blank chance at a goal but Phoebe Aaronson (Mountain View, Calif.) picked up a defensive save to keep the game scoreless after one.
The Lyons were awarded seven penalty corners in the second quarter of play, and none were closer that when Robb lifted a shot over the Pride's defense with less than 30 seconds remaining before halftime, but the ball hit the top part of the right post and bounced out of play, sending the game into the break at a scoreless tie.
Mount Holyoke College finally got on the scoreboard with 10:04 remaining in the fourth quarter when Robb took control of the ball and dribbled it to the middle of the arch, before firing a shot past Morehouse to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage.
Springfield College evened the score with 10:12 on the clock when Carly Torrance (Concord, N.H.) blasted a shot at the cage from outside the arch, which was initially saved by Turner, but Taylor Low (Longmeadow, Mass.) was there to hammer home the rebound and even the score at one apiece.
Just 45 seconds later, Robb netted her second of the game when Abby Baldwin (Florence, Mass.) found the sophomore with a great pass out of a restart, before she turned and dribble past two defenders before lacing a shot past Morehouse to give the Lyons a 2-1 lead.
Down the stretch, Mount Holyoke College was able to fend off late pressure from Springfield College, but held on for the one-goal victory.
Up next, the Lyons will return to the MHC Turf and Track Complex on Saturday, October 5 when they host No. 19 Babson at 2 p.m.
