TROY, N.Y. – The Liberty League has announced its weekly award winners in golf and Mount Holyoke College student-athlete Madi Mendiola has been recognized. Mendiola was named the Performer of the Week after helping the Lyons to a sixth-place finish at the Jack Leaman Invitational last weekend.
A junior captain from San Diego, Calif., Mendiola finished 10th overall and first among Liberty League performers at the Leaman Invite. She opened play with a score of 79 before shooting an 82 on day two for a combined score of 161. Her finish marked the sixth time this year that she has finished 10th or better through seven events.
Mendiola has now garnered Liberty League Performer of the Week honors five times this season, including each of the last two weeks. Last week's honor came after finishing in a tie for fourth overall and first among all Liberty League players at the Vassar Invite, shooting a combined 158 on the weekend. She shot a 78 on day one and posted a score of 80 on day two.
The former Rancho Bernardo High School standout, who has earned nine Liberty League Performer of the Week honors since the Lyons joined the conference in 2012, also had a fifth-place finish at the season-opening NYU Invitational, was sixth at the Middlebury Invitational, third at the Williams Fall Invitational and tied for ninth at Wellesley's Ann S. Batchelder Invitational last fall.
Last season, Mendiola played in 16.0 rounds for an average score of 79.88, a mark that was the all-time best in program history. Additionally, she finished eighth or better in six of eight meets and concluded the year ranked eighth in the region and 32nd in Division III. During her rookie campaign, Mendiola appeared in eight tournaments, playing in 15.0 rounds for an average score of 81.27, which was the second-best scoring average in school history. She also finished eighth or better in five of eight meets and ended the season ranked 12th in the region.
The Lyons golf team returns to action next weekend when it competes at the Liberty League Championships. The event, which will be hosted by Wellesley College, will be held at the Crumpin-Fox Golf Club in Bernardston, Mass. Action both days begins at 9am.
