Golf Solid After Day 1 of Vassar Invitational

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Mount Holyoke College golf team took to the links for the first time this spring on Saturday, competing at the Vassar Invitational. The Lyons posted a combined team score of 342 on day one, good for seventh overall, in a field of 12 competing teams. Leading the way is junior captain Madi Mendiola, who is currently tied for first.

Mendiola concluded day one with a dominant score of 78. She heads into day two locked in a tie with Ithaca's Sharon Li, Williams' Sarah Hasselman and SUNY Cortland's Rebecca Studin.

First years June Conti and Caroline Rubino were both solid in the opening round, finishing tied for 25th overall with a score of 87. Classmate Amanda Lee is close behind heading into day two after posting a first round score of 90 (39th).

Rounding out the action was first year Allison Shilling, who posted a score of 92 on day one, good for 45th overall. Individually, MHC first year Heeamin Lee sits 30th overall with a score of 88, while classmate Kelly McElreath is tied for 53rd overall with a score of 101.

Williams currently leads the field with a score of 319. Ithaca is in second with a mark of 334, while Middlebury (336), NYU (337), Amherst (338) and Cortland (339) lead ahead of MHC.

Action at the Vassar Invitational concludes on Sunday.
