Lyons Sweep Weekly Liberty League Golf Awards

TROY, N.Y. – The Liberty League has announced its weekly award winners in golf and Mount Holyoke College student-athletes Madi Mendiola and Allison Shilling have been recognized. Mendiola was named the Performer of the Week, while Shilling was the Rookie of the Week honoree. Both helped the Lyons to a third-place finish at last weekend's Middlebury Invitational.

A junior captain from San Diego, Calif., Mendiola finished sixth overall at Middlebury with a combined score of 165. She shot an 83 on day one and bettered her numbers by a stroke on day two, posting an 82. This is the third top-six performance of the season for Mendiola, who also placed fifth at the season-opening NYU Invitational.

Mendiola, who is a former standout at Rancho Bernardo High School, also posted a top-15 finish this season, placing 13th overall at the MHC Invitational on September 22nd. Her season-low score thus far is a combined 155, achieved at NYU.

This week's award marks the second consecutive for Mendiola, who has now garnered six Liberty League Performer of the Week honors in her career. Last season, she shattered the school record for scoring average, posting a mark of 79.88 while also recording six top-10 finishes.

Shilling, a first year out of New Caanan, Conn., garnered her first weekly honor after finishing 10th overall at Middlebury. She shot an 83 on day one of the tournament and stayed consistent on day two with a mark of 85. It was her first top-ten of the season after placing 38th and 29th overall at NYU and the MHC Invitationals.

A former standout at Choate Rosemary Hall, Shilling was a four-year member of the golf team. In addition to serving as a two-time captain, she was also a four-year member of the squash team and was the recipient of the Dedication Award twice.

The golf team is back in action this weekend when they head to Williamstown, Mass., to compete at the Williams Fall Invitational. Action starts on Saturday and runs through Sunday.
