Golf Duo Honored by Liberty League

TROY, N.Y. – The Liberty League has announced its weekly award winners in golf and Mount Holyoke College student-athletes Madi Mendiola and June Conti have been recognized. Mendiola was named the Performer of the Week, while Conti was the Rookie of the Week honoree. Both helped the Lyons to a fourth-place finish at last weekend's MHC Invitational.

A junior captain from San Diego, Calif., Mendiola finished 13th overall and first among all Liberty League players at the MHC Invite. She shot an 82 on day one and lowered her score by two strokes for an 80 on day two. Overall she had a combined score of 162.

This is the first weekly award of 2013-14 for Mendiola, who was a four-time Liberty League Performer of the Week last season. She has been solid through two meets this season, finishing fifth overall two weeks ago at the season-opening NYU Invitational.

Mendiola, who is a graduate of Rancho Bernardo High School, has shattered program records since her arrival at Mount Holyoke. During her sophomore campaign, she set the school record for scoring average, posting a mark of 79.88. Additionally, Mendiola recorded six top-10 finishes, was an All-Liberty League First Team selection and was also named to the WGCA All-East Region Team.

As a rookie, Mendiola racked up five top-10 finishes and posted the second best scoring average in school history (81.27).

Conti, a first year out of Amenia, N.Y., garnered her first weekly honor after placing 15th overall and second among all conference competitors at the MHC Invite. After shooting an 81 in the opening round, she recorded an 82 on the second day to finish with a combined score of 163 – just one stroke behind Mendiola.

A former standout at Miss Porter's School, Conti had a great debut at the NYU Invite, placing 14th overall with a score of 166 (84-82).  Prior to MHC, she was a four-year member of the golf team and also served as captain. In addition to earning Most Valuable Player honors, Conti also received the Coaches Award.

The golf team returns to action this weekend when it travels to Vermont to compete in the Middlebury College Invitational. Action starts on Saturday and runs through Sunday.
